The Friends of St. Mary's, Winchfield (the “Friends” or FSMW) was formed as a Registered Charity in 2008 with the aim of “... supporting the maintenance, repair, restoration, preservation, beautification and improvement of the fabric of the church and churchyard ...”.
Since its inception it has raised many thousands of pounds enabling it to contribute almost £50,000 to the maintenance of St. Mary’s. In recent years the Friends funded the restoration of the windows in the church with a grant of over £15,000, helped with the cost of re-pointing of the external walls of the chancel, repairs to the porch floor and to one of the columns in the church, and covered the cost of replacing the ball flowers on one of the stone columns that had disintegrated. In 2022 the Friends of St Mary's funded four major items of maintenance costing around £7,000: the installation of a new central heating boiler; the rewiring of the porch light to overcome the problem of the electricity tripping in periods of heavy rain and high winds; tree surgery in the graveyard; and the overhaul of the organ. At the end of 2023 and at the beginning of 2024 work costing over £3,000 was funded to straighten the weathervane, fill cracks in the render on the walls of the tower, repair the wire netting over the louvre windows in the tower to make them bird-proof, and replace missing or damaged tiles on the roof of the tower.
The Friends have also committed £15,000 from their reserves to the St Mary’s Roofing Project and further added the proceeds of the raffle at the 2023 Winchfield Festival which amounted to just over £800.
Without funding from the Friends, St Mary’s would not be in the condition it is now - please do help us in supporting this part of the heritage of Winchfield.
